Pediatrican, Optometrist, & Dentist

THE DENTIST
Monday September 27th Porter had his first dentist appointment. We went to Children's Dental and I loved the look and feel of the office. It is nicely decorated and has a fun play area for kids. Did get old after awhile. Get to that in a minute.

Porter tried so many times to go in the back (obviously didn't know what goes on back there or he wouldn't have been trying so hard). This door is so cute and just right for the little tike's to go through.
As we waited in the even smaller waiting room Porter had this monster with teeth and a giant toothbrush to play with--super cute! He would tell the monster "AHH" just like I tell him to do when I brush his teeth.
Not comfortable...not liking the chair.
Dr. Scholzen came and cleaned Porter's teeth and checked them out while he sat in my lap (backwards) and with head in Dr's lap. I liked how they did that instead of trying to strap him to a chair.
Porter did cry but mostly because he was tired and had by this point already been in that office and waiting for an hour and a half total. Dr. Scholzen did a wonderful job and was great talking to Porter and explaining to the little guy what was going on. I was honest with him and let him know I was very frustrated with having to wait for an hour before we got called back. He sincerely apologized and told me there had been an emergency chipped-tooth-toddler which I understand things happen. I would just have appreciated a "Hey, sorry but looks like it's going to be longer than your scheduled appointment due to an emergency, would you like to reschedule?" I would have been the happiest new customer in the world. I understand things happen and you can't predict it all, but half hour after my appointment time with a bored and getting tired two year old is the time to be honest when I asked how much longer. It's no one person's fault and I don't blame the receptionist who is just the messenger, but as a team they should know how long a person is waiting and if it's a long time after the appointment, reschedule. In the end we left happy because Dr. S was very kind and did a great job, Porter got a balloon, free kids meal to RR for not having cavities, and a free book. I got to pick the book out and I was thrilled they had a book I have been wanting: Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.
Porter was such a good boy for waiting so long (for a toddler) that I decided to treat him with a trip to Jumpin' Jacks (it's been awhile). It was nap time by then, but I knew he would LOVE to go and I wanted to do something fun for him after the dentist. The pictures are blurry because they're from my phone but you can see some of the fun things he does there besides jump, like beg for candy half the time. *rolling eyes with smile on face*

THE OPTOMETRIST
Porter's second eye appointment 9/13 (third if you count the initial screening before his appointment last year) to have his vision checked. His optometrist is Dr. Paul Gooch and he is great! http://southwestvision.org/
Last year Porter was a little far sighted but doc said that was about perfect for his age. This year he said it "zeroed" out (perfect vision) which is good but could possibly mean from here his vision will go the other way. I have hoped and prayed Porter will follow in his father's footsteps: perfect eyes (never contacts/glasses/surgery) and perfect teeth (never had braces). Only time will tell. His next appointment will be in 3 years when he turns 5.
THE PEDIATRICIAN
Porter's pediatrician is Dr. Larry Cain (actually a family doctor) and he has been great. We love our doctor! He really went above and beyond when Porter was a preemie and we were going in daily the first couple weeks having his blood tested and weight checked. He gave me his personal cell phone number when we had a horrible time getting the ordered oxygen tank to our house due to incompetent home care services and helped us with that problem. I absolutely love his medical assistant; Yadira (who goes by Mary) has been so helpful, kind, and wonderful to us these past two years. They also took me in as a last minute patient for a very last minute appointment (I did NOT want to go to the ER) in August when I had a horrid and miserable full body rash (hives actually). Porter had his 2 year old check up August 26th. He was 25 lbs (15 percentile) and 33.5 inches tall (27 percentile). Was not happy about the shots but appreciated the sucker he got afterward. I am so grateful for good, competent, trust-worthy medical professionals who look after my Porter to be sure his health and physical development are right on track.

You're such a good mommy for keeping on top of his health care needs. I can't believe you waited an hour and a half at the dentist! That's torture with a 2 year old. Oh, well. At least that looks like the most fun dentist office, ever!
