Hello? Is anyone there? Sorry Porter; no one is on the other "line" of the thermometer. ;P (3/9/11) Porter started to get sick this day; we went to leave to go to a store for something and Porter threw up in the car on the way. For the next 4 days he had a cold, cough, constant runny nose, and yo-yo fever (kept going from 99-103 degrees). On Thursday the 10th he seemed to be all better minus the runny nose but the fever returned and he was one sick puppy.

Porter loved playing with the thermometer. After I would take his temperature it would be my turn, then Daddy's, then Teddy, then sippy. This time he wanted to do it himself.

Everyday that he had a fever I wanted to give him a lukewarm (cooler but not cold) bath to cool his body temperature down. Also tried giving him Popsicles and rotated Tylenol and Motrin, and of course most importantly kept him hydrated. Anyway, this day I got his bath ready and was about to put him in when he escaped and ran to the couch to lie down. He didn't feel like doing anything but lay down. It was so sad. I made him take a bath anyway and he did okay (3/9).

March 12th we finally took him to Instacare (since it was Saturday) knowing that he was sick but mostly worried about the high fever. Poor kid had a 103.9 fever! I am so grateful Aaron came with us to the doctor. It would have been a lot harder on my own to comfort Porter and keep him busy while talking to the doctor and asking my million questions. It was also an absolute MIRACLE that we were in and out of there in under an hour. I've heard horror stories of people waiting at the Instacare on a weekend for 4-5 hours before being seen!

Doc said we could basically pass off what he had as a virus--lots of different strands of the flu going around that weren't covered in the flu shot--but the thing that stood out was the incredibly high fever. He suggested we do a chest x-ray in radiology to see if we had a case of pneumonia on our hands.

Porter was a bit scared by the intimidating room of big machinery and just wanted to be held, so laying down on a table truly upset him. I took a picture of Teddy lying down to show him it was no big deal. Didn't help. For the first one Aaron--wearing a sexy, protective, heavy-armored thing--had to hold Porter's arms at his side. Screaming crying kid was so pitiful. I stayed in the background taking pictures and getting teary eyed, feeling bad for my little boy.

The next x-ray Porter just had to sit down by this thing and that was still upsetting. The only thing that consoled him being in that room (besides Daddy's comfort and love) was the promise of getting a sucker. We went back to the room to await the doctor's diagnosis and I made sure to get a sucker from the nurses. That put a smile on that sick little face. Doc confirmed it was in fact pneumonia and they gave him a shot in his leg of some antibiotic to combat the dangerously high fever, and gave us a prescription to take for the next 10 days. Thankfully it was a good tasting one that Porter was glad to take twice a day. I left the Instacare with Porter to get a special treat he requested--french fries--and what he had been promised--a frosty (or as Porter calls it "ice ceam" meaning ice cream). Aaron headed the other direction to get the prescription filled (was a 45 minute wait) and diapers before working a late overnight shift. The shot in his leg was so painful for the little guy that every time he tried to put any weight on that leg, (to stand) or when I picked him up, he would cry and grab his leg saying "Owie! Owie Mama! Bix it!" (Meaning "fix" it!) It was so sad. I was thrilled that within a couple hours of getting the shot his fever was gone and not to return. He walked with a little limp around the house just before bed (Aaron said he was faking which he kinda was...fuuuunny) but didn't complain about it after that. Porter and I didn't go out much that week and the following week for recovery. I only left Thursday (day after he got sick but he had improved that day and had an appetite) for Scout Roundtable meeting, Saturday the 12th to Walmart for medicine, church on Sunday (Aaron stayed home with Porter), and for my OB doctor appointment that week. Think that was it. Boy was I glad when Porter was better so we could get out!

We watched "The Tigger Movie" as a family one night (3/13). This gun is one of Porter's favorite toys right now and when he just held it like this during the movie Aaron said he was on "high alert". Good to know our 2 year old has got our backs and is watching out for our protection. He truly is his father's son. Makes his Daddy proud.
