IT'S A BOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so excited to have another boy, a brother for Porter, another Aaron-look-alike, another future priesthood holder and future missionary, another drama-free kid, another bundle of joy and blessing from heaven! (Just barely found out last week at 16 weeks.) So the great news is I have everything I need (except for a bassinet, would like to acquire a video monitor, and of course as always DIAPERS). The sad part is we don't have a name! Ever since Aaron and I were dating we've had kids names picked out but mostly girl names, no boy names really. So little guy is nameless for the time being but I would like to think of one asap...makes baby more real and gives an identity.
I am holding a lemon. Yes I am. No this is not a lesson about making lemonade when you get lemons in life. This is a record of the growth of my mid-section and baby. I get weekly emails from BabyCenter.com that describe what's going on with the baby development and mommy insides. At 14 weeks along it said the baby was the size of a lemon (3 1/2 inches and 1 1/2 ounces); I happened to have a lemon in the house I got from my bestie Audrey. Of course I did nothing with it the week I should have, so technically this picture is taken at 15 weeks (same time as the next pictures), but really what's the difference at this point?
No, this is no reference to Twilight. I'm holding an apple because that is the comparison to the baby's size BabyCenter.com made at 15 weeks along (baby about 4 inches long and 2 1/2 ounces). Also happened to be St. Patrick's Day...hence the green "Irish Girl" shirt. Last pregnancy when I took weekly baby-bump pictures I just held up a sheet of paper I wrote the number of weeks on with a sharpie. This one I'm getting more creative. =P This stage of the pregnancy is good because it's past the 1st trimester morning sickness/nausea and fatigue. The downside is it's the "gaining weight getting squishy but not lookin' pregnant" time. Blech. It's all worth it in the end! At least I'm not having to take daily naps being so tired now so my house is back to looking presentable and I'm caught up on laundry and dishes. For almost a month there in the beginning I was taking a nap almost everyday when Porter did. I hate that because felt like such a waste of time but I was just so exhausted.
At 16 weeks baby's estimated size is 4 1/2 inches and 3 1/2 ounces...and compared to the size of an avocado, hence the picture with the green thing (generously donated by my friend Alisa who had one she didn't want so I didn't have to go to the store for one thing). The online article also said in the next few weeks baby will have a growth spurt adding inches to his length and doubling in weight. I'll be popping out a lot more although I've already noticed a significant difference since most of my pants aren't fitting!
We're lucky to have been able to find out the sex of the baby so early. You typically have to wait until about 20 weeks, although I've read you can tell as early as 13 weeks. Reason we found out was I had my first appointment with the perinatalogist on the 23rd (went by myself because Aaron had to work, although my OB didn't think they would be doing an ultrasound at this point). They did the ultrasound to check out baby and make sure everything is okay and normal so far. There is no permanent perinatalogist (the last one left the area last summer) so I saw one of the three doctors who rotates coming down from SLC once a week. His name was Dr. Esplin and he was wonderful! Such a great doctor and explained a lot of things in detail which I really appreciated. He was sooooooo much better than the last specialist. He also had a personality and was willing to answer questions, although in his explanations he pretty much answered most of the questions I was going to ask. Next appointment is 3 weeks from the last and after that will be every 1-3 weeks depending on how baby is doing. Then of course I had a normal appointment schedule with my OB which has currently been every 4 weeks and will change to every other week when further along.
One thing Dr. Esplin said was we won't go past 37 weeks for sure, but he wants to deliver probably at 35 weeks because the chart that shows the dangerous levels of anemia for baby ends at that point. We're hoping baby will be okay until that far along. If there is severe anemia early on we will be going to SLC for
cordocentesis (blood transfusion in utero through the umbilical cord). If baby is far enough along to deliver and it's safer to do that than do a blood transfusion, then we'll have an earlier baby. Praying for the little guy everyday! We are so excited about little baby Bergquist bean!
